Our efforts paid off and we spotted some new things as we tidepooled. We had paged through this one quite thoroughly and became a little more familiar with what we might see in the tidepools and along the shore. Surprisingly, there was not one morning of fog the whole time we were camping there so it was easier to get up early to hike down to the beach and explore.įollowing my own advice, I gathered our field guides which included our new field guide for seashore life. We hit the low tides of the year again so there were plenty of opportunities to tidepool in the early mornings. This photo shows how low the tide was for us…you can clearly see the normal waterline. There is something nice about really knowing a place, returning to see favorite beaches and then having some new adventures as well. Harris Beach State Park to be exact….same as last year. I gave the men the choice of where they wanted to go camping and they unanimously chose Brookings, Oregon. In addition, she teaches marine education at the Oregon Coast Aquarium and has spent three years as Senior Marine Naturalist on Marine Discovery Tours in Newport. Educated at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Oregon State University, Athena has spent the last 16 years teaching a variety of classes at OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center. Relocating from the Big Island of Hawaii, she has always had a profound interest in marine biology. In her spare time, she loves exploring the Oregon Coast with her family.Īthena Crichton has lived on the Oregon Coast for over 20 years. She is an active member of the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators and the Oregon Science Teachers Association. Fawn is the former Volunteer Coordinator and current Citizen Science Trainer for CoastWatch, a division of the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition, working with over 1,300 volunteers along the Oregon Coast to educate students about marine science around the region.
She earned a BS in Science Education, a BS in Biological Sciences, an MS in Environmental Education, and an MS in Integrated Sciences with postgraduate courses in learning behavior and free-choice learning. Always face the ocean, be wary of beach logs and debris, protect wildlife habitat, and keep small children and animals near you at all times. Please be mindful and practice beach safety during the Tide Pool Exploriences. Weather and ocean conditions can be unpredictable on the Oregon Coast. Essential Tide Pool GearĮxploring our tide pools can be a slippery business, and we recommend bringing: Parking is also available at the Seagull Beachfront Motel near the beach access. There is ample street parking as well as a public parking lot nearby.
To get to the NW 15th Street beach access from Highway 101, turn west onto NW 15th Street and continue toward the ocean.

This program is free and registration is not required. Tide Pool Exploriences last approximately one hour. Our guides will take you on a tide pool tour to identify and explore local marine life such as sea stars, anemones, urchins, and other colorful creatures. Tide Pool Exploriences take place on the beach at the NW 15th Street beach access and begin with an overview from local experts from the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition.
